Zak Brown – from driver to McLaren boss

Born in Los Angeles in November 1971, Zakary Brown has traveled from young karting enthusiast to one of the most influential managers in the world of motorsport. His career combines racing passion with extraordinary business talent. This very combination allowed him to transform the fate of the iconic McLaren Racing team. Today, Brown manages a global racing structure encompassing Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E, and several other prestigious categories.

From Go-Karts to Major Racing

Brown began his motorsport adventure in the mid-1980s. The young competitor from California quickly showed he knew how to win. Over five karting seasons, he accumulated twenty-two victories. This was the time when his character and determination were shaped.

The next step was Europe, where greater challenges awaited. Brown entered the Formula Ford 1600 series. His first triumphs came at the iconic Donington Park circuit in England. This was a place that would forever remain in his memory as a symbol of breakthrough.

The year 1992 brought participation in the Formula Opel-Lotus Benelux Series. There, Brown consistently placed in the top ten. The following season was even better. He finished fourth, demonstrating steady progress and growing skills.

The decade spent behind the wheel taught Brown something more than just fast driving. He learned the mechanisms of racing team operations. He understood the importance of sponsors and commercial partners. These experiences became the foundation of his later business career.

Building a Marketing Empire

In 1995, Brown founded Just Marketing International. The company was meant to fill the gap between the racing world and the needs of commercial brands. Brown understood both sides of the equation better than anyone else in the market.

The breakthrough came when he convinced the powerful France family, controlling NASCAR, to open up to alcohol company sponsorship. This was a taboo that no one had dared to challenge before. In 2005, Crown Royal became the first sponsor from the alcohol industry in NASCAR history.

This success opened doors to subsequent contracts. JMI grew into the world’s largest motorsport marketing agency. Brown built bridges between NASCAR, NHRA, Formula 1, and other series. His energy and commitment became legendary in the industry.

In 2013, JMI was acquired by CSM, part of Chime Communications. Brown had reached the peak as an entrepreneur. However, he had other plans. He wanted to return to direct work with racing teams.

McLaren Racing Transformation

When Brown joined McLaren in 2017, the team was experiencing one of the most difficult periods in its history. Technology was outdated. Infrastructure required urgent investment. Organizational culture needed deep reform.

Brown knew he had to start from the foundations. The first step was rebuilding the commercial side. Acquiring sponsors and partners was meant to bring capital necessary for technological investments. A new wind tunnel, advanced CFD systems, and modern production facilities required enormous expenditure.

Brown’s strategy proved correct. Gradually, McLaren began regaining competitiveness. The team returned to fighting for top positions on the grid. Not only technology changed, but the entire approach to management and development.

Brown didn’t stop at Formula 1. Under his leadership, McLaren Racing entered IndyCar, Formula E, Extreme E, and esports. In 2024, the World Endurance Championship joined. This diversification strengthened the brand and opened new revenue sources.

Vision of a Motorsport Leader

Brown is known for his courage in addressing difficult topics. He publicly spoke about introducing a budget cap in Formula 1. This solution was meant to level the playing field between teams. Brown also fought for greater diversity and sustainable development in motorsport.

His management approach combines tough business analysis with the passion of a racing fan. Brown can make unpopular decisions when the team’s welfare requires it. At the same time, he never loses sight of fans’ interests. They are the foundation of the entire industry.

Beyond McLaren Racing, Brown co-founded and co-owns United Autosports. The team competes in international sports car racing, the Australian Supercars Championship, and numerous historic events. This shows how deep his passion for motorsport runs.
