In January 1972, twenty-one-year-old flight attendant Vesna Vulović survived a fall from an altitude of over ten kilometers without a parachute. The Yugoslav airplane disaster over Czechoslovakia killed all passengers and crew members except her. The story of her miraculous survival fascinates scientists and ordinary people to this day. Vesna Vulović entered the Guinness Book of Records as the person who survived the highest fall without a parachute.
Explosion Over Czechoslovakia
Flight 367 of JAT airlines departed from Zagreb heading to Copenhagen. On board were passengers and crew who did not expect the approaching tragedy. The airplane flew routinely at an altitude of over ten thousand meters above Czechoslovakian territory. Nothing foreshadowed the disaster that was to happen within moments.
An explosion in the baggage compartment tore the machine into pieces. The official aviation safety report indicated a bomb planted in a suitcase. Yugoslav authorities suspected a separatist group of Croatian nationalists of carrying out the attack. Despite the investigation, no one was ever arrested in connection with this assault.
The airplane disintegrated in midair creating a rain of debris falling to the ground. All passengers and crew members died as a result of the explosion or impact with the ground. Among the victims were people of various nationalities traveling on a routine international journey. No one expected that anyone could survive such a disaster.
Rescuers arrived at the crash site in the vicinity of Srbská Kamenice. Among the bent tail sections of the airplane, they found a young woman. Vesna Vulović, a twenty-one-year-old flight attendant, was still alive despite falling from an incredible height. Her survival seemed impossible from the perspective of medicine and physics.
Road to Recovery
Vesna’s condition was critical after being found in the rubble. She had a fractured skull, three broken vertebrae, both legs broken, and ribs fractured. The pelvis was also broken as a result of impact. From the waist down, her body was completely paralyzed. Doctors gave little chance of survival, and certainly did not believe in a return to normalcy.
Vulović spent several days in a coma fighting for her life. Then months of hospitalization and intensive rehabilitation awaited her. She underwent two complicated operations designed to restore her body’s functionality. The recovery process was long and painful, requiring enormous determination.
Against medical prognoses, Vesna regained control of her legs. Although she walked with a slight limp for the rest of her life, this achievement was considered a medical phenomenon. Her body showed an extraordinary ability to regenerate after such serious injuries. Doctors still wonder about the factors that allowed her to survive.
The most surprising aspect of her recovery was the lack of fear of flying. Vesna did not remember the disaster itself and the following hours. This amnesia proved to be a psychological blessing allowing her to function normally. After recovery, she was not afraid of airplane travel.
Life After Disaster
Vesna Vulović became a world sensation thanks to her survival. The Guinness Book of Records officially recognized her as the person who survived the highest fall without a parachute. She was invited to London for a special ceremony with Paul McCartney’s participation. Her story circled media worldwide attracting the attention of millions of people.
However, fame did not bring her happiness or peace. In the 1990s, she participated in anti-government protests during the breakup of Yugoslavia. JAT airlines fired her from work for political activity. Authorities avoided her arrest fearing negative media publicity associated with imprisoning such a famous person.
Vulović continued pro-democracy activities until the overthrow of the Socialist Party of Serbia during the Bulldozer Revolution in October 2000. She then supported the Democratic Party and advocated for Serbia’s entry into the European Union. Her political engagement was a consequence of beliefs about the need for changes in the country.
The last years of her life were spent in seclusion in her apartment in Belgrade. After divorce, she lived alone on a small pension. She struggled with survivor guilt, asking why she was the one who survived. Vesna Vulović died in December 2016 at the age of sixty-six, leaving behind an extraordinary story of human endurance.
